Troop 225 Website
This was a custom in-house website for my old Boy Scout Troop: Troop 225. I wanted to create a site that would allow the troop to advertise their outings, events, and be a point for internal communication, like emailing, amongst the entire troop including the scouts and their parents.
Things I Did
This project started off very simple. There was the repository that I knew we would use along with AWS so that there were automatic deployments when changes were made to the main branch. From there, we found a website templated to what we were looking for, so we drew some inspiration from there. Sadly, there are no more photos to show since all that was completed was the template on the page with no styling.
How I Got Here
I spent most of my time talking with my troop leaders learning about what they wanted to display as well as how they would like to display it. I would make up some wireframes that would display some information and see how they liked it and would continue developing from there. Once I would hit a big iteration I would demo/show what the site looked like to the leaders and gather any feedback or ideas that they wanted for the site.
What I Learned
During this project I spent my time as the sole developer and requirement gatherer. This was due to this being a personal project to give back to my old Boy Scout Troop. I spent most of my time gathering information about the content and features that they would want as well as customizing the website to feature events and outings that we were doing.
One thing I learned during this project is how hard it is to work on your own. This was because when I would run into issues with something not working, and instead of turning to a friend or teammate I had to figure it out on my own. While I was able to get more work done in the end, this required more time to ensure that I had a proper understanding of the tasks as well as reading the docs more than I ever would have imaged.
Sadly, the project was stopped about halfway through due to the troop turning over due to lack of enrollment of new scouts. I still learned a lot from it and may continue developing it so that if I become a leader for a troop later, I have a site I can use to help advertise it.
